Frequently asked questions

How long is the TBO on an MTU genset? The TBO is subject to the load profile of the engine. MTU gensets are typically rated for a TBO beyond 42,000 running hours, a figure exceeding numbers seen for medium-speed engines, achieved here in a more compact, high-speed package. On a variable-speed genset, that interval can be extended by more than 30% for a typical operating profile, since the engine spends most of its time running below rated speed. This means fewer overhaul cycles and less downtime over the vessel's lifetime.
Can variable-speed gensets reduce fuel consumption? Yes. By allowing the engine to run below its rated speed at part load, variable-speed gensets can cut fuel consumption compared to an equivalent constant-speed setup, with typical savings in the range of 10 to 15% depending on the vessel's load profile. This is especially relevant for vessels that spend significant time in DP mode or at partial load, such as offshore support vessels. Variable speed also gives lower noise and vibration at part load, alongside the extended TBO mentioned above.
What power range do MTU gensets cover? For commercial marine and offshore, MTU gensets cover 700 kWe up to 3,100 kWe (Series 4000), with diesel and gas fueled options, 50 Hz, 60 Hz or variable speed, and IMO III / EPA Tier 4 compliance. For main propulsion engines, the wider MTU range extends up to 10,000 kW.
Why choose BOS Power for MTU gensets? BOS Power has been the MTU distributor in the Nordics since 1969, backed by service technicians and workshops across the region. MTU gensets are engineered for high power density, low noise and vibration, low radiated heat, and quick load response. These properties translate directly into crew comfort, regulatory compliance, and uptime.
Do MTU gensets meet IMO Tier III NOx requirements? Yes. MTU gensets are available with SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) exhaust aftertreatment engineered specifically for MTU engines, meeting both IMO Tier III and EPA Tier 4 requirements. The system uses closed loop control to ensure continual emission compliance and optimal DEF dosing, and has been extensively tested in both test cells and real operating conditions.
